i have adjusted the cable tension so that changing is fine on the smallest cogs and on the biggest ones. However, the middle cogs change OK but make a lot of noise when just going along compared to the outside cogs. Is this normal or is there more adjustment necessary?
Could the spring tension have something to do with it?

Sounds like it just needs fine tuning. If its trying to go to a larger sprocket turn the adjuster to the right as you look at your bars no more than a quarter of a turn.Cables stretching can throw things out of sync easily.
