Wouldn't have thought you'd go far wrong with one of these. Find a shop that will get the sizes you need to try in first though.

    http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... 0-08-28926

Genesis Core - £450: the new kid on the block, designed for UK riders. Standout fork make this a good option, backed up with decent brakes and tyres.

    5-£800

Carrera Fury - £500: incredible bike for the money. Tora 318 fork unbeatable at this price, plus fully butted frame, 9spd Sram gearing and twin piston hydro brakes.

GT Avalanche 1.0 - £500: according to WMB the best 500 quid bike ever, with superb frame, hydro discs, oversized damped fork and great shimano gear inc hubs and cranks

Let us know what you think, and how you get on :)

The forks on the Scott 80 and 70 are a bit naff so just think how much better yours will be for having checked on here ..!

    Hi there.
We just got a scott scale 50 for my partner and she loves it. Havent heard any rumours of dodgy frames or we'd have steered well clear. Looks solid enough though. The forks originally specced were tora's but we got an amazing deal on a bit of an upgrade so had to take it really.

In my experience Scott warranties are excellent. One guy in the shop bought a Scale 20 (I think), foud a crack, returned it to us. Scott sent a Scale LTD frame without taking the old frame back or even asking for pictures. Similar story with a 2007 Scale 50 frame - basically the guy stuffed it, bent his handlebars and brake lever and got a hairline crack in the headtube. Got a 2008 Scale 40 frame right away!

Why upgrade forks and rim brakes when you can save the £350 plus for upgrades with a great bike straight from the store?

I guess the frame on the Scott looks good but then why not spend £850 on the bike from the off?
  • true althoug i realy lyk the way the scott feels so im going towards the scotts

Frame warranties are generally 3-5 years - sometimes more.

Your statutroy rights will out last any warranty
Just use the bike withing the bounderys of what
its designed for, and you will be covered for years.

This may not cover the moving parts and will be a seperate
issue, but your statutory rights still applies with these too.

Any crap just go to your citizens advice bureau and call
trading standards regarding the shop or manufacture.

Maybe the Scotts just the easy route, you know, your mate has one - your familiar with the brand, its in the comfort zone.. I can understand that, hey I bought a specialised !

Take some of the competitiion out for a spin you might feel differently about it. Think of it like a women - all to easy to get carried away with the first one you get your hands on, you want to take your time and get your hands on a few before you settle! :o
  • shud of mentoined  ive rode a few specializeds and they are nice bikes. ive road a 07 rockhopper and a oldish m4 stump jumper with loads of upgrades and realy loved it. shame he isnt selling it thought.

im going to a few bike shops today so will take laroks advice and test a few more. by the way wot do yous think about the 08 Kona blast ??
  • btw larok thats another thing. im no good with the wimon etheir

    Hi,

Mountain Bike Rider in their July issue did their 'dirty dozen' review of the top bikes for around £500.

    Their top choices were:

GT Avalanche 1.0, Iron Horse Warrior 3.0, Lapierre Tecnic 500 (joint 8/10 points)
Comencal Normal Disc, Specialized Rockhopper (joint 9/10 points)
Kona Blast (1st place with 10/10 points)

Not to say this is definitive and what felt right for them might feel wrong for you but they certainly rated the Kona Blast.

They also mentioned you could get the Blast Deluxe for £550 which gave you hydraulic disc brakes instead of the cable discs fitted to the £485 Blast.

You would need to try it but if you liked the look of the Blast you saw I'd add it to your list to try !

Good luck and enjoy whatever you get :D
