Hey
Ive negotiated a deal on a new 2007 model cervelo r3 for £2200. Is this a good deal considering newer bikes in this price range?
Spec:
Groupset = 2008 SRAM rival
Wheels = pmp hubs and open pro rims
Handlebars = Deda Newton
Stem = FSA 0/s 150

    The majority of the money is for the frame and the brand although there really nice bikes £2099 could buy alot more with other makes.

    for £2099 i like this http://www.epic-cycles.co.uk/images/Wil ... o%20se.jpg

    BUT compare it to the Colnago CLX 105 groupset 2008 for £2099 it looks a good deal.

    Well i have to say they are a nice frame. Tested an R3 about a month ago and it did feel good. This one was with DA and DT mon chapparels. Very get up and go feel to it and did a good job with rough road surfaces.

    Good choice!

    I have an R3. It is a lovely frame. I seem to recall when I got mine that the F&F rrp was about the same as your built quote.

    I'd recommend them wholeheartedly, great bikes.

    make sure you get a warranty - my mate snapped one recently. Cervelo haven't got the best quality record

    What about the 2 Roubaixs won on R3s?

    The R3s used for Roubaix were apparently not the "off the peg" model. I think that they were one-offs that were mainly an R3 frame but with an extended rear triangle to give a 1-inch longer wheel base. I think if you search the archives on Weightweenies.com , you can find an extended thread on the subject including contributions from Gerard Vroomen of Cervelo.

  • Where do you negotiate a 2,200 for a Rival build up on a frame that rrps for 2,000?

    I have been looking into this and the soloist and they seem very popular without a bad word said anywhere, in fact only positives. This is the first time I have read anything negative or any attempt to compare them to a 2k build.

    Am I missing something, please expand.

    Thanks

    Yawn,
    I would imagine every manufacturer in the world has had frames crack.

    In fact before my R3 i had the 2.5 which was one of the frames recalled and replaced with an R3 under warranty. Good service from Cervelo.

    I think the only reason i managed it is as they had one 2007 frame left. Not sure about wether you could get the same deal elsewhere.

    Ive seen the 08 frame in some places for £1700 so may be ale to manage it for 2500ish depending on the shop

    This forum is the only place ive heard really negative things about an r3 so i'm a little surprised but the frame has a lifetime warranty so i'm not to worried

    Thanks for the replies

    Have you noticed though that the people who are negative about them don't actually own them?

    I'd eat my hat if you get the R3 and don't love it, i have both an R3 and a BMC pro machine and they are comfortably ahead of any other bike I have ridden.

    Out of interest, which do you find the better bike?
    What's the difference between the two?
    I'm thinking of a new frame this year, and my LBS recently got the BMC frames in. Can't say I like the radical look, but if it rides well, who cares.
    Must say I prefer the look of the R3.
    Are the R3 dropouts/BB carbon or steel/alloy?

    I have set the bikes up so they have the same measurements etc, so my thoughts are purely on ride feel.
    For me, the BMC feels more stable when descending at high speed. I have had them both over in the Alps and have had them up to 60 mph, I feel a bit more confident on the BMC descending.
    They both accelerate quickly and are exellent uphill. For me the steering on the Cervelo is a tad more twitchy, i notice this more on the UK roads than French roads. It is not a problem, just feels different to the BMC. I can't imagine anybody would ride either of them and not enjoy the feel of the bikes.

    Not being one of the comic writes i can't really go into the gushings of lareral stiffness and the like!

    They are both incredible bikes though, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that but I think the BMC looks stunning built up. Here are their pics to compare them.

    I've recently got a Soloist team I would love to have the carbon one but I can't afford it nor really need it! However IMO it the best bike I've ever ridden, I had a couple of problems with bikes recently and I'm very happy I ended up with the Soloist. I haven't ridden an R3 but if its as good as the soloist then its well worth the money.

    60mph, one bottle cage, and riding the Alps with chainrings that size - chapeau!
    The last time I rode serious hills, I arrived at the bottom with rims too hot to touch!
    Nice pictures Celbianchi. Thanks for the info. on the differences/similarities.

    Any idea if BMC are fabricated in China, or built up in Switzerland from imported tubes?

    Haha - I put a second cage on the BMC when away in the sun, in fact I have put a second on it for racing as well now. The pic was taken as i picked it up from the shop.

    I keep my racing set up of 53/39 for the alps, I do sometimes put a 25 on the back rather than an 11/23 though.

    I don't know BMC's production process, their after sales service is pretty good, A famous orange airline cracked my frame returning home from the TDF last summer with it, and I'd only had it 3 weeks! I could have cried. BMC, although not at any fault, took pity and did me a good deal on a replacement.
