My mind is turning to my next bike, having decided to sell My mountain bike (any ideas of an asking price for a Fisher 99 Paragon with 2006 Reba team and hope mono mini front disk?).

I am looking for a Ti race frame to build up when the new Sram 09 stuff is released. I would love a Litespeed Icon but I think that comes in fairly above budget. The bike is to be used for hard sportive/racing and I am looking to spend sub £1K. I'm 6ft 84kg and a reasonably powerfull rider/sprinter so not a fan of flex.

Any suggestions?

Must be worth having a look at the lynskey-built Planet X Pro Road and Sportive bikes surely:

  • As a very happy owner I'd recommend taking a look at Enigma. The quality and service are excellent. The frames aren't cheap but they may have pre-owned stuff in. And they do a rather nice line in Ti frames with (stiff) carbon stays...

If you want to go sub- 1K then Enigma last year had an end of season sale around December/January where some frames costing £1250 were selling at around £1000.

IMHO an Enigma with the 09 SRAM stuff on it would look the DBs!

This BikeRadar thread might put you off Litespeed.

If you're 84kg and "not a fan of flex", Ti is maybe not the ideal frame material. Although some of the beefy Ti frames are reasonably stiff few of these will come in under £1,000.

Lynskey have an excellent reputation so the Planet-X seems a good suggestion and the down-tube looks nice and chunky but I'd be wondering about seatstay and chainstay flex.

Aren't Lynskey the founders/former owners of Litespeed? Not sure if these issues stem from their time at Litespeed

Agree with James_London, Ti may not be the material if you'd rather avoid 'flex'. I ride an Omega (now Enigma), which has a fair bit of flex and that's with me being just over 70kg on a compact frame.

    I'd die for a Moots!!

I'm no Litespeed expert, but I was under the impression that Litespeed's QC issues dated from a long time after the Lynskey family had sold the business on.

I stand corrected and thankful for it.

It always seemed to be the same thing if I remember correctly; the headtube splitting with integrated headsets. Now you can't find one in their range with an integrated headset.

I'm the same height and a bit more weight. I go my Ti bike cutsom built from Justin Burls for less than that. He has choice of three downtube, a normal one, an aero one and big fat bi-ovalised conical one all in good old plain gauge. I chose the big tube and it builds into a good stiff bike - probably not as stiff as some carbon bikes - but it's certainly feels solid underneath you. It's a lot stiffer than the Van Nicholas that had tried before.

I'd recommend having a chat with Justin before you make your choice.
