SPD is Shimano's proprietary clipless pedal system.

Time ATAC, Egg Beaters and Speedplay pedals are all clipless, but not SPD.

Ok thanks. Are cleats specific to each pedal brand or is there some standard?

correct. and the cleats should come with the pedals.

Cleats can also be bought seperately (they do wear out). Shimano also do 2 types of MTB cleat, normal (rotate ankle to unclip) and multi release (rotate ankle or pull up hard to release), I think the standard cleat is the one usually supplied with the pedals.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

A lot of the time when people talk about SPDs they are really talking about clipless - it's like calling your vacuum cleaner a Hoover.

SPD stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics, commonly called spuds :D
