Bike specific shoes on flat pedals

I currently have DMR V12s on my Giant XTC 4.5 and I plan on keeping them until I learn to ride properly!

I'm not a huge fan of flat skate style shoes but I'm finding my Merrell trainers don't give great grip over the rough stuff.

Can I use bike specific SPD shoes on flat pedals with a view to going for SPDs in the future or will they give me no grip whatsoever?

Ross - I use basic (non cycle shoe looking) Shimano SPD shoes without cleats on my V8s.
They have a fairly stiff sole, can be walked in, grip the pedals really well and don't make you look like a roadie reject.

They also cost naff all. I find skate type shoes as useful as teflon coated tyres for cycling.

  • So do you just take off the cleats?

They tend to come with a plastic "skid plate" that you can use in place of the cleat.

Sorry Ross - just been for a run!

The cleats aren't fitted on when you buy them - and they come with the SPD pedals, not the shoes. There's a small "hole" which i cover (from the inside) wth tape just to keep the water out. They work really well.
