This is what happens when you get carried away and lose the front end of your bike on a corner. Shoulder first into a tree at about 20mph on the beast at thetford.

3rd degree separation of the achromio-clavicular joint. Dislocated collar bone in other words. Surgery on friday!

Ouch indeed! I've done something similar at the other end of the collar bone, no surgery required though, I can still pop it out slightly too much to the amusement (disgust) of those around at the time :D

ah the good old AC joint, nailed both shoulders playing rugby. Usually repair well after surgery. Only problem I had was on my right shoulder I had some nerve damage so it took ages for part of the muscle to recover (it is still visibly smaller than on my left shoulder, despite being right handed). By contrast, my left shoulder is 100%. So as long as you didnt dmg the nerves too much you will be grand.

hope the surgery goes well. get well soon

God knows. I'm off work for 4 weeks,so that might give me some idea of how long the recovery process is. I'm sure there'll be some physio involved.

Cheers. How long did yours take to heal?

What did they use to fix it in place? From what I can make out the surgeon is basically going to wire it to the bone below to anchor it.

  • my dad has just had surgery after shattering his clavicle
looked pretty odd with a big chunk of bone floating around in his shoulder.
what they did in his case is screw a plate to the good sections of bone and using a kind of woven lace materal they strap it round and pull it tight like a corset so it levels it all out then attatch the lace to the shoulder bone on your arm and tension it so it draws it together.
and sew you all back up.
after about 3 days he could lift his arm at a right angle but it looked a bit painfull.
(sorry if you didnt want to hear that)
i think all that you will need is the strapping because the clavicle is all in one peice

( i will see if i can find an xray to show the damage)

    Hows the bike?

Absolutely fine. Not a scratch. The front tyre slid away, then bit in, sending me forwards, so the bike never got as far as the tree that I hit!!

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. I've got a bed for tomorrow morning. They'll be drilling down though the collarbone and into the bone below so they can anchor the collarbone back into place.

I should have a cool scar

Unlucky, good luck with the op tomorrow.

I broke my collarbone at the end of April, but no surgery was required, so don't know if that means your healing time will be quicker, the same or longer.

The pain reduced greatly after 3 weeks, I think this was when the bone properly started to knit, and just got better from there on in.
At 5 weeks I saw the consultant and physio, and was then able to drive, but they recommended I stayed off the bike for another 4 weeks, so they wanted 9 weeks break in total between the accident and getting back on a bike.

I'm naturally cautious with these things, as I didn't want to set it back again, but felt good enough to get back on a bike about 10 days before the 9 weeks were up.
That was 2 weeks ago, and I started with commuting, tonight was the first time back on the mountain bike, and despite many tree roots, no pain to be had.

It's good to be back in the saddle, hope you don't have to wait too long.
