Stiff-soled, non-spd boots?

I use toe-clips and (loose!) straps on me mtb and don't feel the need for spuds. But on Saturday's 40-miler I felt the pedals rather through my trainers and have a bruised sole to show for it. Anyone recommend good, stiff-soled boots? Not heavy-duty walking-boots, mind, as deeply-cleated soles are murder to get onto serrated-edged metal pedals. (So if no takers I may have to go the way of the spud after all. Ho hum.)

By the way, sorry I've repeated mesen, rather (see my post about winter boots) but the need for a good, stiff sole stays the same whatever the weather.

Thank you,

Zip'.
