Chain length - how with no old one to compare?

Do you measure chain length on a road bike the same as you would on an MTB - i.e. wrap the chain around the big ring and the largest sprocket without going through the derailleur, and then add two links?

It's a fresh build bike with nothing else to compare to, hence the question.

the big ring and the largest sprocket without going through the dérailleur, and then add two links

    that is one correct way.

there are other ways as well.

That's how I've always done it and I've never had any problems.

I've always wrapped it around the biggest chainring and the smallest sprocket, through the rear mech then set the chain length so that the centres of the two jockey wheels are in a vertical line.

It's always worked for me and it avoids threading the chain twice as per the 'add two links' method.
