creaky chainset

my XT cranks. m751 or something. 2001 anyway, creak when you accelerate. not overly loud, but enough to irritate me, especially as my merlin now runs smoothly and silently. i've tightened bolts and all sorts, but to no avail. what could it be? or is it just one of those things?
