Microwave

After finding my helmet still dripping with sweat from this mornings commute, I'm about 60 minutes away from nuking my helmet pads in the microwave at work.

Stop me if its a bad idea, or let me know if it works if you've done it before....

Hmm... I suppose it depends on whether they melt or not. Might the foam that is inside the pads not be made of some sort of polymer that could melt?

    Tell us what happens!

P.S. I assume no-one would ever be so stupid as to microwave an entire helmet - that would certainly destroy the structural properties of the polystyrene/foam stuff if not reduce the helmet to a pool of molten sticky stuff....

Don't know about that - I'm sure Sky TV's Brainiac team would give it a whirl. :)

    Times up!

took the pad, front only incase it all went wrong: still damp, and smelt of vinegar. Gave it a wash in fairey liquid and hot water, a good rinse, then put the whole thing fully saturated in the microwave 800W on full power for 1:30. I checked halfway through when it started sputtering and popping, but it looked ok, so went the whole distance. came out almost dry, and streaming - too hot to touch.

Anyway, it is now odourless, slightly damp still, and undamaged. It is slightly blacker and more fluffy than the other unmicrowaved samples, so I think thats a resounding success?

I'm thinking next time, I'll put a sacrificial glass of water in there too just to keep the microwave busy, maybe a little longer as well?
It should also definately be sodden when it goes in, since its the water that gets heated.

Next up, my gloves. I'm not sure about the gel pads though?

Haha. Brilliant. Bet your colleagues love you.

    "what you up to C?"
"just microwaving my sweaty helmet pads, you want to put your cup a soup in there?"
    "think i'll get a sandwich"

I was clocked in the process - I had to say that it was a late lunch.

I would imagine the gel pads to explode.

Wonder what happens if you microwave sweaty bib shorts? Mine have air pockets in the chamois... could be explosive and very nasty.... :D

Just rinse the helmet pads regularly, suprised though they lasted 1.5 minutes in a microwave...
