Mavic Mektronic setup

Hi everyone!
I'm servicing a friend's bike and I'm struggling setting up it's Mavic Mektronic rear mech. I've searched for instructions on the internet, but only found a poor scan of an instruction booklet.
I'll explain the problem in case anyone here knows how to resolve it.
I've set the time, the wheel size and the sprockets size, but when I press the gear change button nothing happens. the number of the cog flashes, but don't hear any click from the rear mech or, when riding, the gear doesn't change.
there is no indication that the battery is flat because the display would say so.
I'm going mad with this, please help!!!
