Anybody know please, where I can get replacement cartridge bearings for an STX 1 1/8" threaded headset? Genuine Shimano or generic. I know I could replace the balls under the little plastic covers, but the inside surfaces are pretty pitted. Ta in advance!

I have no idea! have you tried contacting Madison the Shimano importer to see if they are still stocked?

It would almost certainly be simpler to replace the headset complete. Also for this reason I suspect demand for replacement cartridges will be very small and therefore it will be hard to find anyone who stocks them.

Cheaper to get another headset and use the cassette bearings.

If one is just pitted, you'll have spares. I've done this with two headsets - STX and Ultegra.

Good points. Ta both. I think I'll go with the new headset option. Do I just rely on the lubrication already inside the new cartridges, or do I also grease the headtube cups and the top and bottom races? Sorry to be so ignorant!
