I am stuck.. i cant get the top or bottom cogs to engage on my new short cage M770 rear mech. Tuning the High adjustment the mech is just shy of the largest cog but trying to get the Low adjustment anywhere near the smallest cog is impossible, pulling the mech by hand it only sits between the 2nd and 3rd smallest cog. Am i missing something?
Just to see if there was something wrong with me i put the old rear mech on and that sits perfectly under the largest and smallest cogs.... (long cage rapid rise)

you need to adjust the stops. and you do have the cable routed correctly?
if stops are set right. dont forget if not getting the small cogs add tension.
why have you gone from long cage to short?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

If you take the chain off and play with the stops (cant remember now) but one way takes the mech in and the other out. I have gone to the limit of both ways and its still just short of sitting underneath the largest and quite a bit out of the smallest cogs.
I am running a short cage now on my Specialized HT as I am only running 1 cog up front so its just a 9 speed. Cable routing is as per my old set up.0 -

is that without the cable attached?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Yes Nick that is without the cable attached.... (with the old mech 'cable not attached' it would move by hand from H Cog to L Cog perfectly and it would shift perfectly too 'cable attached'
I have a ride this morning so have reattached the cable but can only get 7 out of the 9 gears on the cassette.0 -
As said your stops need adjusting, i find the easiest way is to disconnect the cable and wind the stop out until it hits the fist gear then connect the cable and move to the smallest gear and again adjust the other stop until it reaches the end.
It's quite simple, if you have adjusted the stops and it still doesn't work correctly then something is amiss, too short a chain can make the mech fall short. The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Just to be sure, take the 2 limit stop screws out completely (i.e. remove them from the mech), if you still can't get it to move by hand (no cable attached or chain) there's something wrong with the mech. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
Thanx chaps... I recon theres something wrong with the mech as you cant move it by hand...0
