EA90 SL- Tight bearings- WHY?
Just got a set of EA90 SL wheels; fitted Veloce cassette, tightened campag lockring - freehub locked tight :x --- loosened lockring-- freehub slightly less tight, but when put in frame and tried to ride>>> freehub tight again :x .
Can, and will, take back to LBS , but has anyone else had this experience? What could be causing it? All good Campag cassette and lockring being used. Not happy!!
thanks

so once the cassette is fitted it locks up? when your tightening it can you see the outer hub bolt with the rough edges tightening also?0

there should be some tube sleeves that slip over the axle and space the bearings and the freehub so that when you tighten everything up the lock bolts don't cramp the bearings or the freehub inner face doesn't touch the hub . Have you checked that you have fitted all the sleeves ? if not when you lock up the bearings will get pulled sideways and lock the axle up or the freehub will bottom out and bind on the hub. You should be able to turn the wheel on the axle with your finger tips when locked up tight.
If you place the axle through the freehub and then put the spacing tube on the axle the tube should just protrude about 1mm beyond the face of the freehub where the pawls are located0 -
It`s a brand new wheelset so I`ve not added / removed anything -- no sleeves etc came with the wheels, just skewers, no shims; have tried two different cassette blocks and two different lockrings with same result, OK until I tighten up the lockrings properly (ie moderate force with adjustable spanner ) - the mfr instructions go for a high torque force so I`m not overdoing it as far as I can see.
Freehub is well clear of inner face of wheel flanges too
From description above sounds as if the hub has been incorrectly assembled by the factory??. The gap between the hub bearings at freehub side and end of freehub seems to be bigger than length of thread on the cassette lockring also0 -
Gutted for you mate. I have the EA90 SLX wheelset and everything went nice and smoothly. you will be well made up when you eventually get them rolling tho.. silky smooth ride and nice and light.0

yes it does sound like the wrong sized sleeve has been used. It only needs to be 1mm too short or long and it will cause problems.
Why don't you take the hub apart and see if you can see where the thing is binding. It sounds to me like the spacing shims or tubes are too short to prevent bearing crush
Take a look at the pdf files on Campagnolo website to see all the componant parts in blowup0 -
I`ll ask LBS to do that then, as eeh wheel is not functional at the moment I`d rather someone with more experience checked it than me to avoid any potential warranty problems. Thanks0

Now sorted, new set of wheels -- definitely an assembly fault by Easton-- thanks to Epic Cycles for sorting this out very quickly and honorably for me0

Eastons - they are just so smooth amd silent - great wheels for the price. Don't be put off, I've been running mine for 12 months now and they are spot on. 47.8 mph - sweet as - Tour of the Black Mountains 2007!0
