I have recently purchased a Trek 1.5, I wanted a better specced bike but due to wife getting new kitchen I had to settle for the 1.5 but am planning to upgrade parts when funding is available.
Currenty the 1.5 has Sora 9 speed shifters, sora front mech, tiagra 9s rear mech, Bontrager sport chainset.

Ultimate I would like the bike to be 10s with 105/ultegra depending on funds.

My question is, can I put a 10s chainset on as my first upgrade (i know i will need a new BB aswell) when the rear mech and chain will be 9s. or do I have to change it all at once?

This is actually a sensible way of doing things, because 10s-compatible chainrings/chainsets will work with the slightly wider 9sp chain, but not vice versa. So your new chainset allows you to run the rest of your existing transmission until you can afford to upgrade the rest of it (which will, unfortunately for your bank balance, probably have to be done as one big job).

For all intents and purposes you can run a 9 speed chain on 8 speed chainrings and cassettes - 8 speed sprockets are 1.8mm whereas 9 are 1.75mm, which in the great scheme of things is naff-all difference
