Fork bed in before setting sag?

Just got my new bike :D which features Rockshox Pike 426 Air U Turn forks. They are stiff as hell but the shop told me that they were told that I need to ride the forks for 10 hours to let them bed in before adjusting them. (i.e reducing the air pressure in them)

This does not sound right to me. Have they been misinformed?

Cheers

  • I would set them up for correct sag now in their stiff state but be prepared to fettle them over the first few rides as they settle in. once they have loosened up a bit you should be fine. most forks bed in fairly quickly now. I once had a set of marzocchis that took about 6 months to loosen up!! like waiting for a good women!

you may need to use a lower pressure (more sag) to get them moving better d to initial siction. but as they bed in you will need to adjust the pressure.

  • I would tend to disagree. The sag on the fork will not be effected by the age as such. Its the damping that would be what you should adjust as a new fork will just tend to be a bit slower.

I would recommend always having a look at the air pressure of a new air fork though. Set it to the recommended pressure for your weight and start from there.

Agreed. You need to set the pressure to about 75% of your body weight as a starting point, then fine tune it.
