Hi,

I currently have a ridgeback speed which is great for short commutes around town. However I will be cycling longer distances to work soon and want a 'faster bike'.

Now one option would be tinker with this bike or alternatively buy something new. I definately need a new rear wheel and am thinking of fitting a new rear casette with fewer teath (I currently have the standard 'mega range' type) but I would need to stick with 7 speed or change my shifter / lever combo for a seperate brake and shifter. I guess the next logical step would be to change the front end. I guess by dropping the handle bar with a new stem.

So basically I`m asking what people would recommend, give it a go? I`m quiet happy with bike maintence, if so where to start. Or just leave it and look at budget road road like this http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLq ... 155c002912 or parhaps

http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLq ... D=1&f_bct= or maybe this

cheers

Think I'd opt for one of those semi race bikes.

The "Cross" looks good - very cheap those Revolutions!

    What constitutes "longer distances"?
  • I used to have a Speed and it was a great bike. when I faced the same decision as you, I upgraded to a road bike proper.

The frame on a speed is very heavy and I think the benefits you would gain from changing position of stem / change of handlebars will be seriously limited by the weight of the frame.

I would go for the road bike option, with mudguards and rack as options.
  • Around about 7 miles each way
