Cannondale Gear Problems

I have a Cannondale CAAD5 with non-threaded gear cable stops which means no tension adjusters on the frame. I got some in-line adjusters (they fit into the gear cables a few cm out of the [Shimano] STIs) like most people use, but found that I got problems with gears constantly going out of indexing (like every ride). This seems to be as a result of the in-line adjusters turning as a result of gear changes. I've taken the adjuster off the rear (as there is an adjuster on the rear mech anyway) and this seems to have solved the problem for the rear.

The same drivetrain works perfectly on my winter bike with frame mounted adjusters, so I can't see it being anything else at fault.

I've got 3 questions:

1. Is there a way of stopping the in-line adjusters from adjusting themselves - I don't like just giving up on things that should work, and they do put adjustment in a handy position.

2. What do I about the front mech? I've still got the in-line adjuster in place, as there's no alternative one on the mech itself but I'm always having to re-adjust it.

3. Can the cable stops be threaded to take adjusters on the frame like normal, so I can do away with the in-line adjusters that way?

Has anyone else found the best way round this?

Why do you need cable adjusters at all?

    Erm, to adjust cable tension...

Having to clamp the cables at the mechs at precisely, exactly the right length and resetting when the cables stretch would not be ideal. Isn't that why bikes have cable adjusters?

I've never used the in-line adjusters on my Dale, I always tend to use the barrel adjuster on the rear mech, and I can't remember the last time I had to adjust my front mech...

    fair enough

It's just that I've never, well umm, used the cable adjusters

I thought they must just have been for tinkerers.

you're right that you can index the rear with the rear mech adjuster, but exactly how often do you need to adjust the front once you've get the tension sorted?

I'm a tinkerer all right! I'm tinkering because the in line adjusters are maybe creating a problem rather than being a solution. I'll try taking the remaining one off and see how it goes.

    Cheers for the replies.

Anyone want to buy some in-line adjusters? Superb item, thoroughly recommended.
