Sticky gear

Just come back from a bogo ride, the last mile to home is a vvv steep hill and I suddenly found my chain stuck on my top ring, I have a Giant SCR with Shimano gears. Anyone else experienced this?, suggestions would be appreciated?

    could be a sticky cable, what is the cable tension like?

    if you shift down to the smallest ring does the lever make a click but no shift happens?

    Not had another look yet, stupid knee problem giving me grief (patella tendom), physio told me today to stay off the bike!!!! can only do 5 - 6 mins a day on a trainer.,..........gutted and sick of it.
