Trimming hydraulic brake pipes (shimano)

Afternoon all.
Have just fitted shiny new Deore LX disk brake thingies to my XC bike (off to the alps next week and felt that it was a justifiable upgrade).
The tubes are really long. Any one advise how to shorten them? Could see nothing in the stacks of multilanguage leaflets that came with all the bits.
I unscrewed the cap at the caliper end where the pipe goes in, there was no give and I didn't want to just yank. Suspect I'll need to reprime and bleed the system once I've done this?
Thanks

it is all in shimanos manual and you should have been supplied the clamping blocks in the packaging.
there is also a how to on Parktools webby."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
