Hi, im completely new to mountain biking really, have just been doing some down hill riding now and again, which is what my bike is set up for.
However i now want to use my bike more often for longer rides so i need a bigger selection of gears.
At the moment i have a shimano deore set up, and what i want to no is how do i reattach the two chain rings i had removed (at a bike shop)
I really want to do this myself and learn more about how my bike works.
Or would i be better off replacing the whole crank????????????

So presumably the bike shope removed your 2 rings, the inner ring bolts, the front mech and the front shifter? Did they give them all back to you?

have a read of parktools webby.

but to sum up. remove crank arm. undo chain ring bolts fit outer ring. reattach the granny ring with chain ring bolts.

  • hi, yes i have the two inner rings, but no bolts! is that all i need? the four that are on there holding the outer ring on look to short to attach the middle one tho! Does that make sense?
    Thanks

The 4 that are on there will either be shorter bolts or will have spacers to replace the thickness of your missing ring. With chain-ring bolts, its actually the nuts which are sleeves that locate the rings.

Did your shop leave the front mech, shifter and cable in place?

  • No, they didnt but i have the front mech and shifter.
Will any bike shop be able to sell me the bolts i need?
    Thanks for all the advise!

Should be able to. They normally come in sets of 5 but don't worry if your chainset is 4 bolt (which it probably will be). You need a standard set which come with nuts and bolts and an inner set which is bolts only.

You then need the tools to get the crank off. What cranks are they?
