Hi all,

I'm starting to get back into my biking after a 18 month break when i daughter was born.

On my 2nd ride out the bearings on one side of my DMR Chieftain MKII Cranks gave in so i've had a bike store fit a of M770 crankset as i'm no longer jumping/street so i didnt need such a heavy crank anymore.

Long story short, i'm cleaning up the DMR's ready to sell on to try and recover a little of the cost but i'm having issues removing the still whole bearings from one side. I've tried soaking in some degreaser to loosen them up but is hasn't helped so my question is:

How do i go about removing these seized bearings without damanging the part they are seated in?? Any tips of the trade etc??

cheers - dave

    It does help :D !

The other way to do it is to support the bearing on top of the jaws of a vice with the spindle hanging down, but DON'T clamp the jaws up. Try and make sure that the bearing is supported on the inner race.

Place a piece of wood on the end of the spindle and give it a good wallop with a number one persuading stick (hammer). If that doesn't shift it, try warming the whole thing up with a blow-torch and try again (use rags to handle the hot metal with so you don't burn yourself).

well managed to get the full set of bearings out using a combination of the above so cheers for that guys.

Next is the bearings that are shot, the inner race and bearing have fallen out but the outer race is trapped in the cup still... i'm soaking it in wd40 to see if it helps free it up.

If that doesn't work, any other ideas??

Unfortunatly the inner of the cup is shielding the side of the race i'd need to hit so i can get in with anything :(

I think i'll try heating it up and attacking with a screwdriver to see if that helps but short of using a dremel to machine it out am out of ideas. I don't want to damage the setup trying to remove it as i'm wanting to sell the cranks on afterwards to offset some of the cost of the new hollowtech stuff.

    Still nothing :(

Tried to heat it up a little and it didnt budge, also tried the wd40 thing again and its didnt free it up.

Not sure what i can do now.. might have to sell the other bits as spares.
