Bottom bracket making angry noises

Hi there,
My bottom bracket is making loud, grumpy clicking noises, and feeling a bit grindy - I think the bearings may be dead.
Now, is this dangerous or really problematic, or will it just make my commute harder?!
Also, does anyone know how much a new one costs? I've got a fixed gear bike, road bike frame, if that make a difference....
Thanks!!

about £15 for a bog-std square taperroad0 -
I had this problem a few years ago. If it's making grinding noises, sounds like the bearings've gone. It'll need replacing soon, otherwise it'll get worse and might even seize up completely. It's not so much dangerous, but if left, you might find the BB is stuck in the frame (I type from experience here) and you have to get a new frame and BB. That sucks hard....unless you want a cast iron excuse to buy a new frame.
What kind of BB is it, by the way? You should be able to buy a replacement for £10-20 (Check CRC or Wiggle), but if you're unsure of what you're doing, take it to your local bike shop for a bit of advice. You could try Park Tools website as well - that's got very detailed descriptions and guides.0 -
I had the same problem earlier this year - it was basically knackered! The man in the bike shop re-greased it and said it wouldn't last the summer. But it would be fine for a good while... I got my new fancy tricross instead of a new one. 8)0

Embrace the resistance training! While you're at it try carrying a couple of sacks of spuds around with you.
Alternatively, visit LBS and part with 15 litres or so of Bank of England petrol coupons."Consider the grebe..."0
