Campag hubs - Service question

Hi, I've just serviced my 2007 Campag Record hubs as they were a little rough. What do you normally do when servicing the rear hub, do you grease the freehub pawls or leave them nice and clean with some light oil? I used a smear of lithium grease on mine but as the freehub seems a lot quieter than it did even when new I'm thinking that maybe a light oil may have been better. Not certain whether the grease will stop the pawls engaging correctly and cause the freehub to slip.

i thought grease was the usual practice - if you'd just used oil you would need to service them all the time as it wouldn't have lasted.

it's also a common practice to use a lot of grease to try and silence the usually noisy campag freehubs!

don't worry - i'm sure they will be fine

Thanks for that. After a few miles it'll probably be back to the normal racket anyway :D

I went down the light grease route. It was virtually silent after it were serviced but 100 miles later and it sounds like it did before!
  • I've always used grease on my freehubs (edit: not regreased a Campag yet).

Out of interest (or not!) DT Swiss recommend Molykote for their freehubs. So it's a fair bet that something similar would be good for most freehubs.
