New to own repairs (wheel noise at high speeds?)

My wheels are making noise but only at high speeds (down hill) its not rubbing it's a high pitched wring noise. I have had a look and can’t see anything wrong and the spokes seem fine but have ordered Spoke Wrench to check them. The wheels are about 2 years old and have had a lot of use. What could the problem be? If it’s the bearings I’m not sure if I’m up to or can service them. Is this something for the bike shop to look at?

What set up do you have? Mine used to make a high pitched noise at a certain speed - I found it was the air passing round the rotor and caliper (happened when the wind gusted too!).

I have Avid V brakes but nothing has changed in two years so don’t think its just air. Doesn’t seem to make the noise when on a stand either which is confusing me.

Often things become more apparent when on the trails - your weight loads the bearings, casues parts to flex.

Noises are usually a problem of elimination if it is not readily identifiable. Bearings tend to grind and rumble, not whistle! though check for play, and smoothness of the axle - if rough, or loose, they will most likely need a service.

Thanks for the advice! I think I’ll have a really good ride in it on Saturday then give everything I can service a good going over on Sunday if that doesn’t work bike shop it will be.

Check for the end of your front gear cable rubbing on the tyre. I know it sounds daft but I had a similar thing happen to me on Sunday - I couldn't understand why I could hear my freehub "ticking" when I was pedalling! Turned out it was the end of the front gear cable catching on the inner chainring bolts as I pedalled - tick-tick-tick!!!!
