First day on my new bike and the chain is jumping and skipping the rear sprockets when in gear. I watched this video to help:

However when I adjust my high and low screw, there's no movement at all. Why is this? Do I need to slacken my cable?

Thanks

Colin

have you read the how too on Park tools.

sounds like you need to start at the basics again. All you needed to do at the start would have been add some tension to the cable.

Thanks Nick, though i'm not quite sure what you mean by tension

Basics here I come! I used to know all this but it's been so damn long!

The limit screws are there to stop the rear mech at the top and bottom limits (so it won't throw the chain into the spokes or off the outside of the hub). Cable tension is what determines if the gears index correctly.

I'd also check if you have a stiff link in the chain (whilst off the bike back pedal the cranks slowly and watch the chain links as they go over the jockey wheels on the rear mech, if a link doesn't flow snugly around the jockey wheel it's probably a stiff link and would cause the chain to jump once in gear).

Maybe it is, I mean the guy needs a job once he's out of office :P

The gears are still jumping, I've tightened the cable. Maybe i'm just not doing it enough...

The adjusment can be very fine - as litlle as an eighth of a turn to stop rubbing in some gears. It is critical you get the limit stops set perfectly.

had the same problem this week on 2 bikes that had clashed in the shed knocking the front mechs well out of kilter learned a good lesson in maintanence offav an engineer buddy whilst we realigned them and retensioned the cables
