XT shadow rear derailleur setup

Just bought an ex demo Trek Fuel Ex 8 from LBS, had a couple of rides on it but have an issue with the first 2 gears, i can ride from 3rd gear to 9th no problem but when i try to get in first or second gear it keeps skipping between them, if i keep my thumb on the gear lever it will engage and stay in 1st gear but when i remove my thumb it jumps again, i then have to change to 3rd, which is a bit annoying as i'm not that fit so gets me blowing a bit on the hills!!!!
I'm not to good on bike mechanics so any advice will be gratefully received.

Take it back to your LBS-if they're any good they will fix it for free

Try readjusting the cable tension, on the trigger there will be a small barrel adjuster, turn it in small amounts until it stays in gear, getting the wheels of the ground and turning the pedals by hand while you turn the barrel is the best way, if you have no joy doing it this way report back.0

Already tried the adjuster on the trigger to no avail!!
I would take it back to my LBS but cannot get there until weekend and i already have a ride organised for Saturday morning so need to fix now.

Cheers guys, think i'm there.
I had to retension the cable, lbs had replaced it, then reset the derailleur.
Not yet ridden, will do a few miles tomorrow to get ready for saturday, hopefully i can get in the granny gears LOL.
Anyway cheers again guys, anymore issues and i will be back.
