newbie buying a bike

hi guys i am new to mountain biking and i am about to purchase my first serious bike, i am currently looking at a merida matts tfs 350 it retails at £550 and it looks good thats the main reason i am thinking of buying it, is this a good decision is there a better bike for me out there or is this model no good?
i will use it quite a lot , road and through the forest where i live, i wont be flying down the sides of any mountain just yet..
please can you advise me as i do not have a clue. any help would be great....
