Deore Front mech adjustment

Hi,

my Giant Terrago is a bit noisy when in top gear on the front (largest chainring) and top gear on the back (smallest sprocket). The chain is rubbing a little on the outside edge of the front derailleur chain guide.

My bike is fitted with shimano deore front and rear mech.

Can I adjust the high limit without disconnecting the cable - I've tried tweaking the 'High' screw on the front mech when in top gear but it doesn't move anything ?

I'm going to struggle to get an allen key in to loosen the cable clamping screw as there isn't much room between it and the chainrings - do I need to get hold of a smaller kind of stubby allen key to disconnect the cable ?

loosen or tighten the cable barrel adjuster? little nobley twiddley thing on the cable where it goes into the shifter lever, ccw to increase tension and cw to loosen, i bet 4 clicks solves it. click - it has a notchy rotation about every 20 degrees i guess. that might effect the lowest setting though, or you might be lucky :)

guessing my lx are simialr to deore?

Look at Park Tools' website if you want to know how to make the adjustments.

From what you said It sounds as if the H tension is wrong, but as you've said that adjustment makes no difference you will need to release the cable to adjust the overall cable tension. Check the site - it's all on there.

Thanks guys, sorted now (I think) :D

Released the cable (I could get an allen key in when in 1st gear). Then adjusted the mech as per the park tools website. I did this with the barrel adjuster a couple of turns away from fully tight to give me adjustment both ways once done.

I then did a bit of fine tuning using the barrel adjuster and everything appears from a quick ride round the block to be tickety boo !

    Thanks for the advice guys.
