Help needed with wonky rear wheel

Morning All
Hope y'all cool and groovy
While I was out riding this morning the rear of the bike felt a bit sloppy, like I didnt have enough air in the tyre so I pulled up and had a look around the tyre but couldn't find anything wrong with it.
What I did find was some play in the rear wheel from non drive to drive side, on closer inspection this seems to be coming from the hub body/free wheel where the QR skewer goes through. I have undone the QR and re tightened it but the wobble remains and I have removed the wheel but cant see anything immediately obvious around the hub/free wheel area :?
Anybody have any ideas or is it trip to the LBS time?

what is the rear hub? if shimano sounds like the cones need adjusting.0

Its a Shimano XT 08. The wheels are hand built by Merlin around 3 months ago. Whatever it is the QR skewer goes through is loose and causing the play, dont know much about wheels so would this be the cones then?0
-
take the wheel out, remove the skewer and grab the cones and see if they move0
-
The rubber cap (cone?) on the non drive side of the hub moves0

Does the axle move? Get hold of the steel axle and wiggle it. Is there any play? If so, will need adjusting.0
-
Yes the axle does move when I gave it a "iggle" ( ) How do I go about adjusting it?0
-
An 'iggle' ;-) hehe.
You need a cone spanner (15mm) and normal spanner (17mm). Then the adjusting bit.
Park Tools website has a step by step guide.0 -
An "iggle" a day...
Off to Park I go then to find said handy guide. Out of curiosity is it normal for this to happen so soon? As I said earlier have only had the wheels for around 3 months and only done around 250 miles of trail/xc riding with no jumping or abuse. Aside from suddenly discovering your rear wheel is wonky any other early warning signs to look out for?0 -
It can happen with this type of hub. Hopefully the amount of movement isnt excessive (as a lot could indicate wear or damage).
A hub strip and inspection can't hurt, again park tools says how.0 -
Am I right in thinking that I want the Adjustable Type Hub Overhaul?

Excellent stuff, now to get busy with the hub fixing frenzy.
Cheers for your help Super 8)0 -
No probs! Just take your time - might take you a few goes to get the adjustment right!0

and the missus may take some persuading about the use of the kitchen table to lol :shock:0

That is what they are for! And the bike comes up nice when cleaned in the bath/shower ;-)0

watch out of loosing ball bearings if you take the cones out0
