Chain rings

I'm confused about the bits of a chain ring that are meant to help the derailleur do it's job.Is this a series of teeth that are less pointy/sharp than others?
It's just I've noticed some quite rounded teeth on one of my bikes. There is about 10 of them in a row on both the outer and middle chain rings. The position of these sets of teeth is roughly the same on both rings.
So is this normal or badly worn chain rings?
Ta.

The teeth I'm talking about look a little more rounded than in the picture, and there's about 10 in a row not 2.
The other teeth look perfect as that bike hasn't been ridden much - but I did lend it to my Dad who I think might have struggled with the gears a bit. Seems to work okay though.
Will be taking that bike to work as a lunchtime hack as I just found a second-hand hybrid at a good price.
Thanks for quick reply.
