hi
I am just about to do my first youth 10 mile time trial. i'm using a road bike.
should i take a bottle on the ride, or just fill up before and avoid extra wieght and fumbling about with the bottle on a slightly hilly course

any reply tonight would be useful as going striaght from school to it.
cheers

Drink well before and you shouldn't need to drink whilst racing.

    As Andyp said.
I've never taken a drink with during a 10. It will be over before you no it.

You could give your bottle to the timkeeper at the start as well, so that you can drink before or on the way to the TT and then have no messing about with it during the race

Isn't the bike more aero with a bottle (full or empty) on the downtube...?

Not if you unscrew the bottle cage.

The main problem with drinking in a TT is not the aero penalties/gains of your bottle, or even the extra weight. The problem is that if you've got a bottle then you will sit up out of the aero position to take a drink - that is what slows you down.

For longer TTs using a 'drinks system' that sits between your aero bars - triathlon style - is a good option.

    Cheers, Andy

I think I remember a wind-tunnel study showing that a bottle on the downtube actually improves aeroness over no bottle/cage at all. The surmise was maybe that it improves the subsequent flow of air over the seat-tube?

I may have dreamt it though.

  • most people dont drink on a 25, let alone 10 so you should be fine.

I agree that your body doesn't really need water on a ten miler. However there is something to be said for the refreshment value of a sip or two if your mouth gets really
dry or you happen to be choking on a foul tasting bug that got in your way. I always carried water on TT's, even the short ones. Not a lot, just a bit, for the above reasons.

If you have a frame which is non aero. I.e. Round tubes then I've read that a bottle on the Down Tube will be more aerodynamic than without one. At the same time when I last rode a 10 a few weeks ago my mouth became very very dry after a couple of miles, I don't know why. I would have loved to have had a drink available.

I will be taking a bottle on all my future TT's. (Hopefully this will have contributed to the thread)

I only drink on 25s up and put a 250 ml bottle with one of those pull up spouts in my back pocket and take it out whilst down on the bars - don't seem to need to sit up. Advantage is it doesn't leak when my back is nearly horizontal if I push the top back in.
