Anyone here running Avid Juicy Carbons?

Basically my Rockhopper Pro came with Juicy Threes, and i'm far from happy with them.
I find them underpowered and the lack of Pad contact adjustment means i cant set them up how i'd like - I was forever messing with the pad adjustment on the HS33's i had on my old bike.

Will i notice much of an difference between the 2 brakes?

I had toyed with the idea of changing my front Juicy Three rotor to a 185mm to see if its any better than the 160mm, but i still wont have the pad adjustment.

Merlin are selling the Carbon's in a 185mm front & rear for $200, which looks like a bargain to me!

I was led to believe that all juicy brakes had the same power, the further up the product line you go = more features. Increasing rotor size will defiinately help.

My friends rockhopper pro came with juicy 3's and they were underpowered and you had to pump the lever to get them feeling firm at times. A good bleed sorted them out.

Ultimately you'll never have the pad contact adjustment which does help. I upgraded from 5's to ultimates and love the pad adjustment, i use to piss around with the 5's a lot and they never felt quite right.

I did think the term "wee-wee" made you look a little upper class

i'd spend my money on some formula brakes, or hopes, which I love

Price is a major factor, hence why i'd orginally thought about the Carbon's at Merlin.

I did look at the Formula K24's for $200 at CRC, but thats without rotors. As for Hope's, the Mini's don't have a bite point adjuster as far as i'm aware.

I was very tempted by that same deal at Merlin for the Avid Juicy Carbons too to replace my Giant MPH jobbies. I've heard a lot of good things about the Formula Oro's too, but the LBS don't seem so keen.

They've suggested either Shimano XT, unless I'm trying to do a seriously light build, or Hope as, in their opinion, both are very good and spares are much easier to get. Given the bike is sat at the shop without a front brake ATM, I'm very tempted! Anyone know what exactly the difference between the floating and fixed rotors on the Hope Mono Mini is?

Price is pretty important to me too, so I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the Carbon's if you do go for 'em!! :)

    Cheers,

floating is lighter and looks a lot more pimp. Also less sensitive to setup and heat buildup.

I've not had any issues with hope brakes, but formula are supposed to be fantastic as are the new xt.

Yep the LBS think the new XT is better than the XTR in terms of breaking power + feel and very reliable, just slightly heavier.

The LBS didn't have any criticism of the formula oro's specifically, just said it can be more difficult with have accounts + dealing with the small importers and not every shop will be able to do that where as every bike shop has to deal with Shimano, and Hope will send out the smallest part of any brake and put a lot of effort into serving the UK market.

A friend of mine isn't too happy with the Hope Minis that came on his 2006 Mount Vision, I'm not sure of specifics, but I'm not entirely sure they're designed to be abused in all conditions through the winter, they seem more of a lightweight XC race brake to me?
    looks a lot more pimp
They do look the dogs ....! :D

I've heard that the '08 XT's can be fiddily to set up and need quite a few bleeds. That puts me off tbh

The Xt's are great, set up is easy and bleeding is a breeze, no special tools required either.
