when fitting new pedals I have cross threaded the crank on the left pedal - guess I need a new crank - its my winter bike - decathlon 7.1 sport - what do I need to buy ? - both left and right or just the broken one ? - what do I need to do to ensure compatibility ?

and budgets crank recommendations welcomed

Your LBS should be able to sell you a LH crank.I had to cut a crank off a spindle last year and got a spare. It was a chunky thing so I filed and polished it to the shape of the RH crank,as near as I could.Since it was for my commuter I wasn't too fussy about an exact match.

Would it be possible to use a Tap (or is it a die, I can't remember) to re-thread your crank? I picked us a set of taps and dies for €8 in Aldi a few weeks ago.

The taps you bought in Aldi will be a metric coarse thread. To tap your crank you need a 9/16" cycle thread tap from a specialist supplier like this:

Also if it's the left hand crank you'll need a tap with a left hand thread. These are about 3 times more expensive than a right hand thread tap.
Depending how damaged the thread is it might not be possible to re-tap it.
Much easier to buy a new crank.
