Hitting a car - if you do, you should stop!

This morning the woman in hi-vis and with helmet that was infront of me pushed through a tight gap up the inside of a stationary car. She hit the wing mirror of the car knocking it forward. She didn't stop, say sorry or even acknowledge what she had done (and you know when your bars hit a wing mirror when scooting past a car so ignorance is not an excuse).

I offered to put the mirror back into position for the woman driving - who was very calm about it. Just saying "rude woman" about the cyclist. There was no damage, but that is not the point. Manners would say that you should stop if you hit anything to check if it is damaged, and apologise. 8)

Also if you do damage a mirror in a similar scenario then suck it up and pay for the damage (mirrors can be bloody expensive). How would you like it if someone damaged your bike and just kept going?

Do unto others etc. etc. etc.

A similar incident to me the other week, bloke pushed between me and and a car, knocked the wing mirror scratching the cover, and then just cycled straight through the red light, tw@t.

    I hate this......

Had a guy on a Halfords special did this to our car..... but at least he also had the grace to fall off as well!

Not much you can do, and all the mirror needed was uting back in place - so we wound him up. Upturned his bike, made a point of noting the frame number and informing him we would be tracing him through the "National Bicycle Database", and seeking damages.

Now as a cyclist you know there is no suchthing, but as a PoB he didn't. Suddenly became very apologetic and offered to pay for repairs. We decided to let him stew and wait to hear.......

I clipped someone's mirror once when filtering, and I immediately stopped and apologised. The driver very graciously accepted my apology and said there was no damage, so I went on my way.

It's worth joining the CTC for the 3rd party insurance, as it is very easy to cause several hundred pounds worth of damage through minor carelessness!

I've done that, I was really embarrassed.

    So was I

I pulled in directly in front of him (was filtering through stationary traffic), and waited for a second, hoping that the ground would open up and swallow me, before I turned round to face the music.

    !

Would they pay out if it's through carelessness ?

just strikes me that if so then, as a company, they could be on a hiding to nothing having to constantly pay out for some of the muppets-on-a-bike

(and no i'm not suggesting what you done was wrong, just asking the general question)

That's generally the way 3rd party insurance works, yes.

As a business model it seems to work for an awful lot of insurance companies.

as opposed to pure accident or deliberate damage?

I ran into the back of a car once when my front brake cable snapped. Slightly worrying if you dent a panel it's gonna cost you, although in this case it could be argued to be a pure accident, for which, I believe, there is no such thing as liability. Made a note to get some insurance after that!

My home contents insurance covers me for third party damage. They also offered to pay out when I had a crash on the way to work back in Feb this year. I crashed trying to avoid a pothole but lucky for me the council have now admitted liability.

I think most home contents insurance will cover you for at least 3rd party damage on your bike or as a pedestrian. Worth remembering if a pedestrian knocks you off your bike.

Quite right. I went out with my camera after getting out of casualty. I took a series of pics showing the pothole with a long steel rule for scale. I also took pics of my injuries and damage to my clothing and bike.

It took the council 3 days to visit the site and another week to fill in the hole. As they have admitted liability all I have to do now is see a consultant so he can asses my injuries.

There have been a few people on this forum who have posted about bending peoples mirrors as a way of getting back at them for doing something stupid in their cars...only for those people to be verbally abused/attacked by the enraged driver.

I think people have to be especially careful when dealing with things like this because road rage makes people do stupid things they normally wouldnt do when they are "sane".
