Is it worth spending a few bob on my old bike or not?

It's a 1992 Denton Cycles; reynolds 653, shimano 600 (the one before they changed the name to ultegra), downtube indexed shifters, biopace 52/42 front, 11-23 back. I'd like to change the gearing to something like a compact set up for more range and ease for hill climbing. I'd also like to convert to STI changers. It would have to be new ultegra at the least.

Any thoughts on costs for this, or is there no point and I should shell out for a new bike?

cheers
