I am trying to fir an octalink BB to my frame but with 3 - 4 threads left the cup become very tight and i cant tighten it further.

Its a 68mm BB and i measured the BB shell to be the same size.

I have been following the instructions on park tools
Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

threads on the shell damaged? have you cross threaded it?

get the LBS to check it out.

Oh you have not fully tightened the drive side? slacken the drive side off a few turns.

ok i have slakend the drive side off a few turns and the cup now goes in easily, now the drive side is sitting out slightly.

How much force should i need to get it in correctly?

so now tighten the drive side till it is snug against the shell.

It is not an 68mm E type bb is it?

I will have to check the BB when i get home, It is the one that came in a merlin cycles deore grouset so i just assumed it was the correct one.

I didnt see it say e-type on the shell but that would explain it if it was.

    Thanks for the help.

a e-type is about 2.5mm wider to fit in the band on the e-type front mech, so it won't fit unless you used some sort of spacer perhaps.

If you need a spacer, an HTII spacer is 2.5mm and IIRC the spacer used to space cassettes on freehubs is exactly the same diameter and thickness and so would do equally if you have one in your toolbox.

I remember seeing an E on the writing on the outside of the non-drive cup come to think of it.

May be LBS time to grab a spacer or if it its more then the cost of postage it will be another retuen to merlin...

you might get away with a different non-drive side cup if you have one that looks suitable.

Not sure the old would fir TBH.

I just went to my LBS and got a spacer, question now is what side to put it on?

Do i need to mimic the position of the hanger by mounting drive side
    or
do i need the BB flush for correct chain line by using it non-drive?

I did ask at the LBS and the guy wan't sure.

I can't find any info on an ES31. An BB-ES30-E is an E-type and a BB-ES30-K is a standard type if that helps. If it is an E-type, you put the spacer on the drive side to mimic the front mech band.

The 31 was a slightly newer Deore level octalink - as you say, need to know wheter he's on Es or Ks.

    Ok got it here:

    BB says

    BB-ES30
    68AK
    BC 1.37x24

    L <-- 121 --> R

On the cup it says BC 1.37x24 68E

I think you might have the non E type bottom bracket with a an E type LH cup!

I'd wait for someone else to confirm ;-)

When you say the cup, is it the one that is fixed onto the BB or the loose one that says that?

    loose

If it was a standard BB with an E type cup that wouldn't at all surprise me at this stage :p

yes but mine measures 71mm from inside of the cups both sides. (looks like 69 on yours for the same point to the same point)

The thread on my loose cup measures about 15mm, or 18mm from inside to where the whole thing ends.

My loose cup measures about the same (70 - 52 = 18mm) I reckon your fixed cup thread will be about 13mm in which case I reckon it is an e-type BB and you need to put the spacer on the fixed side.

Can't say for definite without seeing it but that's where I'd put my money.

my fixed side measures about the same as yours.

looks like my loose cup threads are 2mm longer @ 15 (yours look like (56-69 so 13mm), and the whole cup looks about 1.5 mm longer (52.5-69 16.5mm?).

on the fixed side they measure 10mm threads which looks the same as yours.

Tried to take a pic but my ruler markings didnt come out.

yes it is from a square taper BB though and the cup went right inside the shell, will it be suitable?

If not can i use the spacer on the new loose cup?

i would finger fit the bb not the whole way but most, then fit the old loose cup till flush, and then tighten home the drive side followed up by nipping the non drive side.

fit cranks and then check the chainline.

tried it and I am left with a small gap drive side which i can push a fingernail into, is that OK or is it essential that it is completely flush?

    thanks again
