I'm back into cycling after a many years absence. I bought a Specialized Allez Triple three weeks ago and it's awesome. £549 is typically what you'll pay for the triple, £499 for the double. I can't recommend it highly enough :)

All the main manufacturers' bikes in that bracket are lovely bikes. I can't recall anyone saying they bought a <insert make/model here> and felt they had made the wrong decision.

It helps to try a few out before you spend, that often makes the decision a lot easier.

Brands that get rated frequently include Bianchi, Cannondale, Felt, Giant, Specialized, Trek. Reviews here, search the forum archive for lots more.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.

Another very happy Allez owner after many years away (although I have also never read a post stating that someone isnt happy with their bike, whatever brand) and just for Rich HCP another Alfa driver :D

I too got a trek 1.5 on friday. absolutely love it. The spec is not as high as some bikes at this price mark but the quality of the frame more than makes up for it. I feel like a climbing god now compared to my last bike.

My head says sell it and get something a bit more practical, my heart says you do that and I will stop beating :P

You could try Focus as well.
Towards the end of the season they do good offers, like one with 105 for £500, which i got and Ultegra for £100 more.
