Trek 6700 vs GT avalanche expert

I'm going to look at the avalanche expert tomorrow night, but before I go for it, I don't want to feel like i missed out on something else, so thought i'd look at the trek 6700. From what I hear frame wise they are two very different bikes. But what i'm wondering about is spec?
Trek
GT
Where does your extra £150 go? (I know that they are the same price in the sale, but the Trek is still an £850 bike, and is for sale at that price everywhere else and most of the year round.)
Is it all just on the forks that make up the money? as the rest of the spec seems pretty similar? I must admit i'm not that much up on everything so have probably missed something else.
Any views / opinions on the 6700?

The GT is a touch more hardcore - burlier frame and fork, more relaxed angles, compared to the Treks more XC poise. The Trek gets the lighter and more expensive Recon fork, and the excellent Bontrager finsihing kit and arguably better brakes.
Both are very good in their own right - so I'd go and se them in the flesh, have a sit on them or short test ride.0 -
Trek would be my choice.0

Have just got a Trek 6700, and I am extremely happy with it... One thing I will point out to all potential buyers of bikes around this time, if your looking for something in a 21" frame or above your gonna struggle, and strike it lucky if you find one... Trek have no more 6700 in stock, so its gonna be a matter of hunting them down... Spent the last week trying to find a bike eventually had to Order online from Evans and then drive to pick it up... but it was worth it...
I also believe specialized are the same, with no large frames in stock...0 -
Cheers.
I'd need at least the 19.5 as i'm just over 6'2'' so will see what they have.
Going along tonight so will see if I can have a look at the trek as well as the GT. Been a little put off by the review of the trek on this sites review section slating the long stem that it come with, but I guess i'll just see what I think.0 -
Ok so tried them both. The trek has better brakes, is lighter and has better forks, but I just prefer the GT, it looks so much better imo, I like the sram gears although they will take a little getting used to all done by thumb, no finger trigger, and the right and left side are opposite to each other.
The brakes are a bit spongey on the GT and have a lot of travel on the lever at the moment, hopefully they will bed in a bit, plus i'll get used to them.
The trek really is a long bike and isn't helped by the stem, I just didn't find it overly as comfy. And i like the GT ride position.
decision made I think.
Never used clipless though so the candy's that I think the GT comes with are going and swapping them for some V12's before I pick it up once the ride2work scheme goes through.
I can see why people like the Trek, it is much better spec'd and really light. But I just couldn't turn the GT down, its a great colour too!
i guess it didn't help that both the guys in evans I was talking to were GT fans.0 -
Really glad you tested them, and made that choice! Enjoy the bike (yeah, I am a GT fan too, but I do like that trek ;-))0
