Any good rule of thumb for fitting sti shifters to the handlebars?Specifically I mean where in relation to the bend, higher or lower, or is it up to personal taste to an extent?

Initially Trial and error, and eventually from experience.

Just play with them before cabling it up to see how you prefer them.

    Hi there.

The most recent trend is to fit them fairly high up the bend, this allows you to grip the top of the hoods in your fist while resting your wrists in the wee gap behind the hoods and your forearms then sit comfortably on the top corners of your bars. I like this postion for long, flat sections of road, or sitting at the front of a paceline.

I think traditionally you'd fit them so that the brake levers are approximately vertical - the way I've described above they'd probably end up slightly higher than this, but it depends on the shape of your bars.

But whatever works for you is best!

    Cheers, Andy

You need to be able to brake comfortably from both the hoods and the drops. You should experiment to find a position that lets you do this. It will also depend on what type of bars you have. The more modern 'ergo' ones let you run the STIs nearer to the top of the bars but still have the brake lever fairly vertical. They are not to everyones taste though.
