Fitting bike computer, anybody have to do "this" ?

I received my new 2008 wired Cateye Strada Cadence bike computer to replace the Topeak 140 that was a bit erratic. When it came to fitting the cadence magnet / sensor and rear wheel speed magnet / sensor , Cateye say the gap between magnets and sensors shouldnt exceed 3mm . No matter how I positioned the rear wheel magnet and sensor , the gap wasnt near 3mm and I used the rubber backing supplied for the sensor and it still wasnt close enough, I then took a section of old rubber bike tube and attached it to the back of the rubber backing. When I secured the sensor to the frame of my Trek 1000 racer , it was then about a 2mm gap and worked very nicely indeed.

The gap between the pedal magnet and cadence sensor , no matter how I positioned the units was too big also . I had to take the sensor out of its rubber housing and insert a small amount of blue tack into the housing , so as when I pressed the sensor back in and then attached it to the frame , the line which takes the reading from the magnet was now about a space of 2mm , and again, it worked fine indeed.

Im surprised that I had to do all this to be honest. The strada tracks superbly and I had no issues with it at all . Is the fitting action I had to take indicative of me fitting it wrong, or with bike / cadence computers is this tinkering around par for the course ?

I think my gap is more than 3mm, and it works fine. I largely ignore instructions and set the computers by trail and error .

The Strada Cadence is a good computer overall.

I have one of these computers on both of my bikes, and both times they were a real pain in the ass to set up. I've had to put a bit of padding behind the cadence sensor to narrow the gap. The good thing is that once it's working it rarely goes wrong, except today when I hit it as I was clipping in.

Keep persevering and you'll eventually get there!

    Cheers
