Hey. looking to start XC riding with a propper mountain bike rather than my good ol' BMX. Have a budget of around £1600 ish. looked into a few bikes, but would love some great info from some people who know more than me about this subject.
Thanks in advance.

Thats a big budget, and gives you many many options - from exotic titanium and carbon framed hardtails, to light full suspension. Is it just XC you will be riding?0
-
i think i'll try all the types of mountain biking if i get a bike that can handle everything decently, and safely. Bit of an adrenaline junkie to be honest.0

Sounds like you'll be better off with the new breed of 'all mountain' bikes - they have 5or 6 inch of suspension travel, but light enough for moderate length bike rides. Basically an all rounder, and this budget will bag you some nice ones that don't weigh a bomb.
Something along the lines of this:

But many more options.0 -
would you definately recomend a full suss bike then?0

You could of course go for a 'hardcore' hardtail - and being from a BMX background you may well prefer that. Time to test a few out I reckon!0

does anybody know anything about evans cycle shops? theres one close to me so could pop down there n take a few out for tests.
Been advised by a work mate of mine to take a look at the stumpy HT, has anybody found one of these to be good/bad?0 -
The Stumpy is a very good XC bike - but not upto adrenaline fueled antics, and drops and jumps! It's a bit too light for that.0

back onto specialized, the pitch has had some decent reviews, you know anything personally about it?0
-
Not tried one - a few owners on here have them, worth searching for comments. Good value, big hit bike. But a few steps away from a full on XC bike.0

Perhaps a Stumpy FSR would be more suitable than the HT."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

or the heavier enduro for a more all mountain rather than cross country experience

Stumpjumper FSR for a more XC ride

Are you thinking of riding cross country as well as the downhill stuff and how much of each?My Ride Stumpjumper Expert 20080 -
probably more XC than anything else, just if i see something i fancy doing, want a bike that should be able to handle it.0
