Creaking BB / Cassette??

Over the last few weeks my bike has developed a fairly load creak / knocking nose when I pedal hard after a period of free wheeling i.e. sprinting out of corners etc

After the initial knock it seems to go away until the next corner etc when it does it again.

GIven that I am out of the saddle I am guessing that its not the saddle / post combo and more likely to be the bb or freewheel.

Any ideas?
Must try harder..........

    Hi Phil,

I would try the obvious first. Tighten the peddles, check the BB is tight, clean and lube the peddles and just check all the rear wheel spokers ar tight.

Some frame/BB conbinations seem prone to squeaking.

I recently had this problem with my BH L60 carbon frame. Lost count of the times I checked the bottom bracket and pedals - in the end I re greased the headset and the creaking went away! :?

This is not so much a creak. Its more of a sudden knock as you power down.

Just been out and tried to make it happed and I cant.

Only seems to happen after a period of coasting.

Might try swapping my wheels over to make sure its not freehun related before I started the greasing process.

happened to me after using my bike on a turbo for a few weeks.
Ended up being the back wheel hub.
Swap the back wheel and see if it still does it.

I had similar problem. Tried all the usual suspects, replaced cassette, chain, tightened chainring bolts, greased seatpost and dropouts, BB threads.

My LBS (GBCycles) eventually discovered the factory (Easton) hadn't put enough grease in the freehub on my new EA90 SLXs. Stripped and regreased, free of charge, voilá, noise gone.

Bike now as silent as a silent thing being silent in a vacuum.

Moral of story - check everything that moves and never underestimate the value of your local bike shop.

When i had that on my via nereone it was a tiny split in the seat post. Also many of that model come with a nasty cheap bb and front chainset combo. Worth looking at.
As a final note ive just returned one of my CR1 frames on warranty for similar problem. Mine was the alu cup that sits inside the bb area of the carbon frame slightly unseated and therefore impossible to fix!

don't underestimate the value of a diligent and thorough bike mechanic. some really care about what they do and will track down a problem. others will just look for the easy solution and want to keep replacing parts.
