Apologies if this has been done to death...After suffering 2 punctures on fully inflated continental ultra sport tyres on a recent ride in County Donegal I'd like reccomendations for tough 700 x 23 tyres. I have to run 23's 'cos my Tifosi won't run any larger under its mudguards, what do you run with and reccomend ?

I use the Spesh Armadillo 23/25 tyres and have had no punctures in 18 months. Not sure they will fit under your mudguards though.

Continental Gatorskins are meant to be very good for puncture protection while still having good ride qualities, almost as good as a proper race tyre. I can confirm the good ride quality although I have punctured on them, once in maybe 1,000km of use so far.

Specialized Armadillos are bomb-proof but roll and handle badly. They are slippy in the rain. But you will not puncture (I have managed over 20,000km puncture free on these.)

Just started with a set of Schwalbe Ultremos - these are meant to have halfway decent puncture protection for a racing tyre while also having excellent ride quality and very low weight (sub 200g.) So far I am very happy with them indeed, they roll and handle well and no punctures yet but I am only 500km in.

That's my experience but remember at the end of the day you can puncture on any tyre, (excepting Armadillos ;-) To an extent I accept this and get on with it.

Ultra Gatorskins are pretty good and much less unpleasant to ride than Armadillos. I've worn out a set of Force/Attack and a pair of GP4000's without a puncture too. None exactly a joy to ride though...

    I love my Michelin Krylions.
I've given up on Conti UtlraGatorskins and I felt unsafe on Specialized Armadillos.

Anyone use slime in the tubes?

Must be a good way of resisting flats.

  • Panaracer Pasella Tourguards: bombproof, grippy and run very smoothly. I use 700c x 25s but they're available in 23s as well...

I've been running a pair of Michelin krylion's on my bike and I absolutely love them. :D

I've done over 1300 miles on them so far and no problems yet or punctures. The last part of my ride is over a dirt track with a loose rough surface and they cope very well, my last tires which were bontrager hardcase tires did puncture a few times going over the same surface.

The tires also roll incredibly quickly and provide great traction even in the wet and they wear very well too, michelin say they're good for 5000Km. The only problem is they seem to be very hard to get hold of at the mo. :(

They come in different sizes 700 x 23 and x 25, so they should fit your bike. I hope mine last out so I can get another pair when they're available again. :)
