been looking around a lot these two seem to be the best hardtails with hydraulic suspension in £300-£400 price range. Which one would be better for on and off road endurance, or if you know any other bikes in that price range that would be helpful. cheers.

2 quite different bikes.GT has more relaxed feel,XTC more stretched. Both good but different,so you need to test ride.

XTC frame is used on several higher end models so good upgrade potential, later.
Very happy with my XTC but you might find the more upright, relaxed riding positin of the GT suits you better.

The XTC frame has been reviewed as being quite a harsh ride. I agree with Spiderman, they are fairly different bikes.

Whats the budget?Personally if it were my choice,I`d spend a liitle more and get a Rockhopper Disc for £600 or go up to the Avalanche 1.0.A little extra get you quite a lot more in both cases and will save costly upgrades later.

I know to my cost.....

For the £600 mark, i did alot of searching and found the Trek 6500 disc to offer the best spec for the price as they have knocked £100 off the rrp of £700.

Rockhopper V brake worth a look. Yes it has Vs, but you save 100 quid over the disc version - and as it is disc ready you can upgrade to discs, often for less the 100 quid! A no lose upgrade situation, and you might just be fine with Vs, many of us are.

Actually, not the 2007. For 2008 they use the same frame across all the (aluminium) XtCs. Before that, the 4.5 used a different frame from the 3.5 and upwards. That's one of the reasons that I went for the 2008 4.5 rather than the 2007!
