So I just ordered these - why are they so good?

Are there any special tricks I need to know about?
I assume you put them on, and just drop a normal jersey over the top?

Because Nike said so!!! And would Nike lie to you?

Well, most people use chamios creme to keep things really friction free down there.

That's all there is to it.

Ah ok, no I didn't mean those Nike ones in particular, I meant bib shorts in general.

What makes them so much better than normal shorts?

Bib shorts are very comfortable becaus there is no tight and restrictive waistband. It would be bad enough standing up, but when cycling, a tight wast band would cut in in the wrong place. Secondly if you have any degree of tummy, (I do!!) they can roll down. Thirdly, bibs provide support higher up, above the waist, which I find comfortable too.

So all round, they are the comfiest things to wear on a bike.

Get a tight fit to keep your men's parts from moving about and chafing. Add Chammy cream before a long ride, wash them regularly and you'll enjoy.

I don't know that they are "so much better" but a lot of people say they like them because
they don't like what they consider the "restrictive" waist in normal shorts. I've used normal
shorts and didn't have problems and used bibs with no problems. You can take a p*ss
along side the road a little easier with the normal ones. This is very important for us older
    guys.

I use them cos of the lack of waistband and that if my shirt rides up (i MTB too so wear a backpack) then my arse does nt show.....

Well you can't genuinely know the reason behind buying a piece of clothing if you have never worn something surely?
My peripheral vision had picked up a general favouring of bib shorts on this forum, and that was one reason why I bought them, and the reason for this thread was to try and get the exact reasons why they are favoured.

I'm certainly not borrowing anyones before I buy

Thanks for your replies Dennis and Lycra man!

I have used both for long cycles (200km+) and they both work for me. I don't get the waistband pressure problem with non-bibs. Normal shorts are a bit easier if you have to go for a rear toilet break as with the bibs you basically have to strip entirely and remove your top layers to get the shorts down. Not generally a major problem. As Dennis says it's a bit easier to urinate with normal shorts but it's perfectly possible with bibs too, they pull down far enough to get it out without taking the straps off. Would be an issue if you were of the female persuasion though.

Maybe its better with the modern fabric - but in the days of wooly winter tights - you needed to wear braces with them or they'd be round your knees after a wet ride.

My braces had a nasty habit of twanging off. I think this is why Oakleys were invented soon after... ;-)

All my shorts for cycling are bibs, but if I go spinning - I wear gym shorts with no braces and a little pad. I do roll these down slightly or it does cut into my tum.

I guess bibs are fine but think there should be separate pre-event poo loo queues for those with them.

When I first got bibs, I tried them on for Mrs wrx, thinking I looked like some sort of Chippendale in them.

    She burst out laughing

in bibs I just pull the leg bit up let my pecker out and have a piss - I have even mastered the art of pissing while riding.

having a crud tho is a different story..

    Hi there.

I tried to go for a pi$$ 5 minutes before the start of a winter duathlon once. Only then did I find that my club mate had pinned my number on through the back of my skinsuit and the thermal top I was wearing underneath....

    Cheers, Andy

ps bibshorts rule - whether you're fat or thin. If you're the former then you'll have the waistband digging in problem mentioned above with normal shorts, if you're too thin, then the damn things never stay up - I used to always catch them on the nose of my saddle as they started to sag,

pps If you have trouble going for a pi$$ in bib shorts then perhaps the problem is with your equipment...
  • I got some of those Nike bib shorts the other week. Extremely comfortable. The chamois is very good (no saddle soreness after 93 miles on the White Rose Sportive - and that's without any chamois cream) Peeing is easy because they are cut low at the front so you just have to pull them down a little bit.
