Hello,
I am buying a new hard tail to replace my old rockhopper on the bike4work scheme.
A bike shop local to me is doing a good deal on the trek 6700 (£699 should be £850) which i was considering buying one until i read a recent review which described the handling quote "wobbling round every corner" . Surely it can't be this bad can it ???? Need some advice off TREK 6700 owners please !

Was it a "proper" review or one on MTBR or BikeMagic?"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

The review was in "What mountain bike" June 2008 . They put it against the kona Kula and the Scott Scale 40.0

In the rest of the review, it saysWith a shorter stem fitted, the Trek’s latent enthusiasm for carrying speed into technical terrain was released. The sharpness of steering and overall power response of the stiff frame makes the 6700 a real hard-kicking speed bike, too.[/url]
It seems as if the stem was what caused the poot handling, a relatively cheap and simple thing to replace!"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -
Why not test out the said bike?0

After my recent experiences I have to agree with SS. There have been a couple of bikes where I've only had to sit on them to know they just didn't feel 'right'.
One problem I think everyone has (and the reason why this seems to be the most popular section of the forum) is the lack of a realistic chance to properly 'test' a range of bikes.
I'll be buying a new bike this weekend but haven't had the time to roam the country trying bikes from, for example, Merlin (only opening one Saturday per month must cost them sales and, as a result, money). I may still try and get a day free but the roundtrip is 120 miles (not a huge amount if the bike is right but a lot of expensive fuel if I sit on and go 'no'!!!).0 -
That is all it needs sometimes - just a sit on the bike: often you get a feeling if it is right or wrong. Some shops will let you have a quick run in the car park.0

Sat on the bike in the shop today tried 17.5" the 19.5" and the 17.5 felt really good. Also tried Rockhopper which was my other choice and it just did'nt feel right.
As the the thread said earlier on its a pity i could'nt give it a more realistic test,i ordered
the trek and pick it up next week . Then for the real test.0
