Why has David Davis resigned? He reckons he's going to stand for re-election and he's standing down on a civil liberties point. I wonder if he's been caught with is pants down

Ah, the Lib Dems have said that they won't field a candidate against him in the by election. It's a stunt to draw attention to 42 day detention legislation  Very sneaky...and clever :?0

Actually I think he has done a very brave thing. It's about time someone put their head above the parapet and railed against this nanny state. I don't hold out much hope - the fascist lefties will always hold the moral high ground (yeah right). You won't see many Labour MPs put their necks on the line. Good on 'im I say. Seat 5, Coach D, near the loo
On a serious note, I can see Davis's point, and using the by-election as Joe Public's opportunity for a "mini-referendum" on the 42-day issue is a cracking idea. However, the Tories have a healthy majority in that constituency, so it should be a cut and dried outcome already and as such I'm not sure how much it will achieve in terms of changing Brown & co's minds - if he were to stand for a safe Labour seat and win it from them by a mile, it would be an excellent way of proving the point. On the other hand, if the existing majority in Howden is seriously boosted and Labour lose their deposit and/or get pushed into an obscure finishing position by remaining votes being cast for Greens, Independents, etc., I suppose it will have some impact.
Also, I found it bizarre that the government had to fall back on the DUP to push the bill through - that'll be a party from the one bit of the UK where it was proved donkey's years ago that internment doesn't work, then....

Well apparently Kelvin MacKenzie the ex Sun editor will stand against him. He would apparently be in favor of 420 Days. As goes the usual argument...I've done nothing wrong so i've got nothing to fear.
The trouble with civil liberties is that its very easy to drum up support for the removal of them, by panicking the public about terrorism. The government then try and make politicians who stand for civil liberties feel like they've got blood on their hands. Furthermore, many Civil Liberties arguments quickly look hysterical, i.e. comparisons with a fascist state.
Having said all that, I am greatly in favor of protecting our civil liberties. Whether you admit it or not, there is good evidence that police and the government will miss use "anti-terrorism" laws. Furthermore, I always thought we were not meant to let terrorism change our opinion of human rights. Finally, I fail to see how many of these attacks on our civil liberties would protect us from terrorism, ID cards will make us more at risk from identity theft and the whole 42 days thing won't make a blind bit of difference in the process of catching terrorists, or preventing the terrorism. You live and learn. At any rate, you live0 -
I wonder if DD was equally appalled when Thatcher & co decided that the miners in Yorkshire had far fewer human rights than the rest of us. is there any record of his actions at that tme?
shlepcycling's analysis is correct.0 -
AAAHHHH that Carrot again ....but it was OK for a certain labour MP to tell the Miners to spit at Police Officers and try to bring down an elected Goverment.bagpuss0

Well, there will be a record of his actions at that time if you really want to look it up, and if you feel strongly about it you should. However, you can make an educated guess that to get where he is in today's tory party he would have had to follow party line.
Therefore, you should just take anything he says about wanting to protect civil liberties as a complete joke, and keep voting for NuLab, who have obviously done a great job at protecting them and sticking up for the small man against big commercial interest. You live and learn. At any rate, you live0 -

not sure why we're discussing this on the bikeradar site...but still!
How long will it be until the miners' strike ceases to be wheeled out as some kind of stick to beat Tories with? I'm not sure what DD has done is particularly wise or even heroic, but I do fail to see what the events of 1984 (the year, not the book) have to do with this. And a right to a job in an unprofitable nationalised industry using taxpayers' money is not a 'human right', even if the strike and responses to it represent a stain on our history from all viewpoints.0 -

Forcing a by-election is of course political flim-flam. Just as 42 days is political flim-flam. Whilst I hate the Tories, I hate Islamists too. And I'm not impressed on what the current administration are doing either.
I will admit to approving to what DD is doing. He's an odious little shit but if flagging up what is happening to our ancient rights and liberties makes a handful of frightened sheep think beyond what they read in tabloid editorials it will be worth the kudos he gains.0 -

I'm glad you've joined up here. Since bonj skipped off to CycleChat we've missed having a village idiot. The place feels more complete with you.0 -
If it gets the same or more publicity than the Crew & Natntwich by-election then it will do as hoped. If it doesn't then it's a wash out.
He does have a strong majority, the party he had a 3% majority over (Lib Dem) are not putting a candidate forward.
I seriously doubt he has a chance of loosing it. Some of the "rebel" labour MPs shoudl be doing this though, fi they really actually care that isDo Nellyphants count?
