does anyone know if these have been discontinued? I need a new set for my commuter but they seem to be rarer than rocking horse sh*t.
What have they been replaced with or whats the next best alternative for about the same price?

CRC has them in stock... in November. I guess Michelin don't have the capacity to make PR3s and Krylions at the same time? Kinda stupid if so.0
-
Fukcing ridiculous if you ask me, a company with the history and prestige of Michelin can't continue manufacture of both models, don't understand it.
Both fantastic tyres btw, I got some grey 23 Krylions last year and very glad I did too, fine training tyres.0 -
If you do find any please put the word out. I promise not to panic buy.
Great tyres as you say. I had a pair of 23mm and they were faultless last winter. Hope it doesn't come down to it but they look like they've got another winter in them too.0 -
listed on wiggle, all colours all sizes...
...discontinued.
I may have found some though lil more expensive at 20 bones each but it'd be worth it just to have them in store if they are being discontinued.

That's just Wiggle, they have a habit of saying something is "Discontinued" if it's going to be a while before they are likely to get the stuff back in stock.0 -
Dennis N had a link up yesterday for an online shop they sell them in the States. Might be worth it to do just that .....0

Don't these tyres have a reputation as being damned impossible to get on and off wheels though :?:
What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!0 -
I have Krylions Carbons on my audax bike. I also have a new set in the cupboard. Could be tempted to part with them for...say...£100 each :shock:I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks0
-
I've had 4 sets of krylions on different sets of wheels and never had any trouble with them. I think they're awesome personally which is why I'm gonna stock up if I find some!

just fitted a pair to campag rims-they went on ok'dont forget lads, one evertonian is worth twenty kopites'0 -
I admit to being handless but my Krylions were brutes to fit to Dura-ace wheels. I went through two tubes trying to fit the front tyre at which point I gave up and my local Cycle Surgery blew another two before the tyre submitted!!
Despite this, I haven't suffered a puncture and I really rate these tyres highly.

My Krylions are more difficult to fit onto Campag wheels ( Italian ) whereas they are easy to get onto my Mavic wheels ( French ). It was once said to me that French tyres fit French wheels better whereas Italian tyres do the same for Italian wheels.
I was speaking with Andy James from Michelin quite some time back and he warned me that there had been a problem with the quality of the product used in the Krylion tyres and this had caused a hiccup in manufacture and that there would be a shortage soon. I stocked up ( took 3 pairs from Wiggle overnight as I run them on both bikes ). He also said that when the Pro Race 3 came out the manufacturing line would be focussed on that more.
He didn't mention that the Krylion would be discontinued though so I think the absence of the tyres is for the above reason, not due to being discontinued.
If you wait a little bit I will see if he would like to reply himself !! - he is the UK contact for sales for Michelin in the 2 wheel department.

I can recommend All terrain cycles! My tyres just arrived outstandingly quickly so if you want some get them from there.

It would be nice to hear from Andy James at Michelin why they needed to stop production of one tyre to concentrate on the release of another, thus creating a massive shortage.
Total madness from a major manufacturer imo, or is this the epitome of supply and demand?0 -
I am quite sure it was not the supply and demand trick of the modern manufacturer.
I believe that because of the inferior component that was supplied to make the Krylions that the decision was made to forge ahead with the Pro Race 3 tyres lock stock and barrel. Once the machines are converted for the run it is easier / makes sense to keep them going.
No hidden agenda I don't think.
Just a sound business sense decision.
They could have just pumped out the inferior tyres to us all - like other no doubt do.0 -
Okay people, here is a reply from Andy James - he sent it to me via email as he has had problems at work with access via the server. This is a direct quote form him:
I can confirm that the Krylion Carbon range HAS NOT been discontinued and I though I should offer an explanation why this popular range is not currently available.
In June of last year we internally discussed the launch of the new Pro3 range which was originally planned for January 2008. Consequently, the production of the Pro2 was due to be stopped in July which coincided with the closure of a production facility in France and the movement of the production of these top-end road tyres (plus the Krylion Carbon) to a new outlet. We realised that we might have a couple of months of shortage but we did not think that this would be a problem with all of the residual stock in the system.
Unfortunately, we had a problem with the HDPP fabric in the Pro3 - this was manufactured externally and the company went out of business so we quickly had to find a replacement, test and homologate. It was quickly realised that this would mean we would not have the range to launch at the start of 2008 as planned. At this time we discussed several options but realised that we could not be without a premium road tyre for a prolonged period of time so the decision was made to restart production of the Pro2 to create enough stock to cover this gap. Unfortunately, the Pro2 and Krylion Carbon are made on the same machine and it was an either/or situation. Now the Pro out-sells the Krylion Carbon by about 20 to 1 so it was a real "no-brainer". This machinery stopped making the Pro2 at the end of 2007 and is in the process of being shipped to the new production facility. Whilst this is a relatively simple procedure - dismantle the machinery, ship it, reassemble, test, recalibrate and restart production - it can take anything from 6 months onwards. If we had stopped using the machine in July as planned then it would have been shipped at that time and production would have restarted in around March this year and we would probably have had enough stock to cover this period. As it was not shipped until January it means that production will no restart until around the End of August meaning stock arriving in the UK around a month later in late September/early October.
On the subject of the Pro3 range, we had originally planned to wait until we had sufficient stock of all colours/sizes/versions to launch in full but we decided that a compromise of a staggered launch would be best. This has meant that the Dark Grey 23mm version was launched a couple of months ago and is already receiving rave reviews in the cycling press. Several base colours (Digital Blue, Dark Blue, Red and Yellow) in 23mm launched at the start of June and should be in the shops now. More colours (Black, Ivory, Yellow Flash, Orange Signal) in 23mm, a 25mm and a 650C version in Dark Grey, the Pro3 Light in Digital Blue, the Pro3 Grip in Dark Grey plus several limited edition colour options (Cement/Orange Signal and Tobacco/Digital Blue) will launch around the time of Eurobike at the start of September. There will also be a Light Grey in 23mm and a 20mm version, probably in Dark Grey, launched towards the end of the year or possibly into 2009. For more information visit www.michelin.co.uk and click on the Pro3 link at the bottom of the page!
I hope that this goes some way to explain the current situation which is far from ideal as we realise but somewhat beyond our control. If the information changes on these tyres then I'll try and post to let everyone know. In the meantime, if anyone has any other questions, comments, feedback or suggestions then they can post on here or mail me directly at andy.james@uk.michelin.com! Happy cycling!"0 -
Yes very good explanation but I still maintain it's very short sighted of a major tyre manufacturer to under perform on one of it's models. For a manufacture not to have more than one 'machine' I find ridiculous.
The Pro Race series are fantastic tyres and I wouldn't use anything else, but the Krylion carbon is also an extremely good winter training tyre and a great loss if they did discontinue it. Reasurring to hear this is not the case.0 -
"no brainer" as in a single pair of krylion carbon will last longer than 20 pairs of pro3 (well depending on how much mileage you can get done in a week). crc will hav krylion carbons in stock in the middle of october, probably some others will be the same if a bit slower. glad u got an answer full quoted.0

One of the biggest attractions of the Krylion is that is one of the best tyres produced in a 25c format.
For most riding on knobbly British roads, 25's are a much better choice and also roll better than a 23 of similar construction.
This is something that Tyre maufactures could promote and support by ensuring that there is a good choice supply in this size.
25 could be the new 23!0 -

Got to keep the sponsored riders and pro squads happy, though, so I guess Krylion production had to take a back seat for this reason also.

I just bought some at the Decathlon Store in Sheffield. I also bought the Michelin rim tape and had no problems with fitting both on my Vento rims.0
-
Good to hear you can at least get them somewhere.0
-
Just had a quick spin on the them. Very impressed. I can see what all the fuss is about now but the real test will be this coming Autumn/Winter.
Hopefully, they should start re-appearing soon (as per the above email from the Michelin Man). There is obviously a big enough demand for them.
I bought some PR3's and they are equally as good as PR2 although TBH, I cannot tell the difference.0 -
They're just briliant tyres I reckon. Love riding them in winter time, everything a training tyre should be. If anyone knows where to get 25s let me know, I have 23s at the moment and lovely they are but I'm sure the wider size is more comfortable.0
-
They only had 23's at Decathlon. You tried any European retailers, although I guess with production as it is, everywhere is the same.0
